Wichita clutches and brakes provide the high-speed acceleration and deceleration that are essential in modern process equipment. They are available in a variety of designs and mounting configurations and are used extensively around the world by leading OEM’s in metalworking, steel, pulp/paper, material handling, paper converting, mining and energy.

Wichita provides custom designs to meet your particular application requirements, giving you the right solution to meet all your power transmission needs. Call for more info or to order parts:  800-394-0078.

Hydraulic

Hydraulically actuated and released clutches and brakes and combination clutch/brake units

Actuated with hydraulic pressure and internal components immersed in oil, this line of clutches and brakes is ideal for applications that require high cycle rates and or high speeds.

The oil film aids in transmitting the torque until the unit is fully engaged. The heat generated during engagement is transferred to the oil and is transmitted away from the working surfaces by the circulating oil.
Features of hydraulic units are:
  • Long component life, wear is virtually non-existent
  • Maintenance intervals increased by a factor of 5 to 10 times
  • Low driven inertia
  • Faster response speed
  • Higher cyclic rates and operating speeds than standard air actuated dry running units

Hydraulically actuated units with internal dry running components are also available.

Air Clutch

Pneumatic and or Air Actuated Clutches

Wichita or Industrial Clutch units are designed for dry running with full circle gear tooth friction discs. They are designed to transmit motion and power from a rotating member of the drive train to a stationary member. Engagement of the clutch will allow the system to accelerate up to full speed. The range of Wichita or Industrial clutch air clutches is from 6" (150mm) to 60" (1500mm) in diameter in either 1, 2, 3 or 4 plate units. Whether you require shaft-to-shaft, through-shaft or end-shaft/quill shaft mounting, Wichita or Industrial Clutch has the clutch to suite your application

Some features of Wichita or Industrial Clutch units are:
  • Smooth start-up or extremely fast engagement can be achieved depending on your needs by controlling air pressure applied to the clutch.
  • Combination clutch/brake units are available for extra flexibility
  • A variety of high Cycle, high speed, low inertia designs
Air Brake

Pneumatic and or Air Actuated and Released Brakes

Wichita or Industrial Clutch air set and or spring set brakes are designed for dry running with full circle gear tooth friction disc. They are designed to stop, control and hold a member of the drive train. The size range of Wichita or Industrial Clutch air set or spring set brakes is from 6" (150mm) to 60" (1500mm) in diameter in 1, 2, 3 or 4 plate units. Also available are spring set air released brakes for fail-safe applications. Whether your requirements are through-shaft or end-shaft mounting, Wichita or Industrial Clutch has the clutch to suit your application.

Some features of Wichita or Industrial Clutch air set and/or spring set brakes are:
  • Smooth controlled deceleration or a fast stop can be achieved by controlling the air pressure applied to the brake.
  • With a spring set brake, extremely fast disengagement can be achieved for start/stop applications such as a stamping press or an emergency stop for safety reasons
  • A variety of high Cycle, high speed, low inertia designs

A special line of air brakes designed for continuous slipping duty or tension applications is available from Wichita Clutch.

Whether you need to control pay-out tension of papers and/or webs or reel speeds on wire and cables, air applied tension brakes for smooth control from Wichita has potential to save you money and time.

Some features for air tension brakes are:

  • Air cooled for light duty
  • Fan cooled for medium duty
  • Torque transmitted is proportional to air pressure applied and unaffected by centrifugal force
  • All air connections are stationary

Water Cooled

KK/SS - Kopper Kool /Spring Set brake or Clutch

For high-energy continuous slipping applications such as dynamic tensioning duties where 'fail to safety' is required.

The KK/SS is suitable for end-shaft or through-shaft mounting
  • Available in two actuation options:-
    • a) KK/SS - Spring applied / air released 'passive brake' for emergency engagement in the event of air supply failure
    • b) KK/SS/Dual acting - A brake combining the advantages of excellent air applied 'active' control plus the added security of spring applied 'passive' holding and stopping action.
  • Water-cooled brake with the cooling water contained within water jackets.
  • Copper plates quickly transfer the heat away from the friction surfaces to give good control and long life.
  • The friction surfaces are dry running.

Air and water connections are stationary

WC - Steel Water Cooled Brake

The WC is designed for medium energy continuous slipping applications.
Special designs of the Water Cooled brake are ideal for high-energy cyclic duties where a compact brake with low inertia high and heat capacity is required and radial space is at a premium.

Suitable for end-shaft or through-shaft mounting.

Features of the WC are:

  • Water-cooled brake with the cooling water contained within water jackets.
  • Cast iron or steel rubbing surfaces
  • The friction surfaces are dry running.
  • Air applied brake with friction pads rubbing against a full circle water jacket.

Air and water connections are stationary.

Fluid Couplings

Soft Start and/or Over Load Protection

Known in the past as Simplatrol, Formsprag or Mesur-Fil, the smaller size 7.0, 9.4 and the 12.4 size fluid couplings are manufactured in Wichita Falls, TX.

These are available for electric motors from 1&Mac218;2 HP to 2500 HP that operate at speeds as low as 500 RPM and as high as 3600 RPM. During start-up the fluid coupling will reduce the current draw on your electric motor by 33%.
Fluid couplings come standard with:

  • High temperature Viton™ oil seals
  • Welded construction to eliminate leaks on size 7.0, 9.4 and 12.4
  • Bolted together housing on sizes 15 and larger
